How do you like green?

I like it very much, especially in pictures like this one:

Map progress

:)

Looks promising, eh?
Though this is not exactly what I had in mind for this news post, when I said about it in my last comment (I aimed for green and blue only :) ), but turning the red into green would take me at least another month, and I didn’t feel like having you guys to wait that long. The work in the last month + 10 days took me much more time than I expected, because the day after I wrote about the next news piece coming in one month I got in trouble in my job (not my fault :) ), and had to switch to another job (well, not exactly ‘had to’, as I dreamed about working there since 5 years or so). It’s now settled up, but the last month was quite intensive for me (like that would be something unusual, right? :) ).

So, almost all Maps are finished. Well, not exactly. Alexfont looked at them and said the same thing I have read in one of the comments here before: they are empty. In fact, there are only 5 NPCs over entire island. This is not good. I will need to work on this a bit, and add more life to the island. So why haven’t I done it before? Because the first plan was to make voices for the demo, so every dialog line would have to be recorded with proper voice actors. Do I have to say that this would require a huge amount of time? This is why I tried to keep the dialogs count as small as possible. And this is also why we, after a short discussion, changed our mind, and decided to make the demo voiceless. Seriously guys, you have been waiting for this for too long now.
Adding more actors that say something textually won’t take much time… I hope.

Now for the one missing Scene – Hegesippe’s house. This part is quite demanding, because not only the Scene is one of the three most complicated scenes in the Demo, but it also requires three new 3-D models to be made. The models are problem for us, because, as you probably know, we only have Animator Studio for model editing, and it is a very simple program with very limited capabilities, that requires very much effort to make something decent with. Well, we can edit existing models, and this is what we will do, because creating new models is impossible at all. But still that will be quite difficult.

What about the work from other guys that I have lost contact with? It’s all fine now. They were making some grids for us, and now they are finished, so everything is in order.

Other things that have left for the demo are: full screen images for the intro, setting up some music for the scenes, putting everything together for release, and… beta testing of course. Taking all this into consideration, I think the demo release is possible already before the end of this year. But please don’t quote me if I’m wrong with this estimation :) .

Beta testing is a real pain.. Having to play bits again and again and again, making sure to make every possible ‘mistake’ a player might make and more.. If you wanna ruin your favorite game.. beta test for it ^_^ I really don’t enevy that task. Which remins me.. I got some Beta Testing to do myself ¬_¬; Thank god I don’t do the correct ‘forms’..

Wow good job everyone involved really lovely to see a fan project like this coming on so strong. If i might make a suggestion when there’s a demo released you should shout about it anywhere and everywhere you can. There are alot of dormant fans out there who would want to play this if they even knew it was being made.

Keep up the good work, a voiceless demo is just fine.

Don’t get me wrong, but even a voiceless game is. The thrill of the game is the adventure it self, the quests and the marvelous scenarios (for the 90′s standards of course). I know that you want to excel, has you already have done so much, by giving the huge LBA fans another chance to play.

For instance take Zak McKracken 2 bad example (from my point of view). When they finally released the game it was a German version only. How hard could it be to have english subs/menus? Sure getting the voices right is hard, that I understand, but translating the menus and dialog, that is just peanuts! So, my point is, that the voices are nice, but they are not what everybody needs to play.
Since my childhood I’ve played games, starting zx spectrum, and even with no voices the pleasure was just the same, when the game has a good plot and playability like the LBA games have. LBA 1 had no voices, at least the version I played, and it was awesome.

    Happy coding!

Have you played Zelda series for Gameboy? They have no voices at all (except for the Minish Cap for GBA, which has some exclamation sounds only). Still, for me, they are among the most favourite games of all times. I hope the demo will cause similar feelings for you :) . Thanks for support!

I feel way too old.. most of my games i played, and even still play, don’t have voices ^_^; LBA was probebly one of the first Adventure games i played that DID have voices..

lets see if this jogs anyones mind.. “I HUNGER!”

  15. Ben says:

I am so glad you guys are keeping up with this. I am playing the originals again, and would love to see some similar work. Whenever you can, I can’t wait to see a demo.

  16. Zink says:

onearmfrog, not for the demo, sorry :) . The demo will be voiceless.

Ben, thanks for your support. For now I can say that things are going more or less to the plan. I think I will post a progress report some time soon.

  17. Elpoutro says:

I just found your website. I’d be happy to see again the LBA’s world.
    good work

  18. Phreak says:

    Good stuff guys :)

Don’t worry about the lack of voices – the first time I completed LBA it was in total silence…. because it was based in dos and I didn’t know how to correctly configure the sound driver for it :P

Look forward to breaking, er locating bugs in, the Beta and/or demo soon :)
